Weld pair backed for Champion Bumper Success

Mark Ingram - 11 Feb 2010

The Dermot Weld trained Hidden Universe has been backed in from 14-1 to 7-1 with William Hill to land the Champion Bumper at this year’s Cheltenham festival. He joins his stablemate Elegant Concorde, himself a market mover 10-1 to 11-2 with Sky Bet at the top of the market.

Hidden Universe was seen making a very impressive debut at Leopardstown in January, when comfortably beating Timesawastin by 10 lengths in soft ground.  Elegant Concorde had to work slightly harder on his seasonal reappearance at the same track in December when accounting for the Henry De Bromhead trained Spill The Beans by two lengths.

"I saw Elegant Concorde is favourite and he's hopefully going to run in the race providing the ground is good," said the Irish trainer.

"Hidden Universe is very adaptable on soft ground, Elegant Concorde is a yielding to good horse. Depending on the ground, we'll possibly decide the day before which horse we run.

They are very, very ground dependant. It's over a month away and there's no need to make a decision. They both have to stay sound and healthy and Cheltenham is a while away yet."

Dermot Weld is now a 3-1 shot withLadbrokes to train the winner of the race but it does look very unlikely that both of his stable stars will run.
