4.00 Cross Country Handicap Chase Cheltenham Tips

James Cameron - 14 Mar 2011
The Cross Country Handicap Chase isn’t a race that looks particularly enticing as far as punting goes and while it is a thoroughly enjoyable contest, it isn’t the sort of race you would approach with an open wallet.

Edna Bolger’s dominance in the race was ended last year by A New Story who scooped the prize off 6lb lower and he will do well to keep dual winner Garde Champetre and stablemate L’Ami at bay for a second year.

Instead it could be worth taking a chance on Paul Nicholls’ Gullible Gordon who will have to bounce back after he took a tumble in the Becher Chase last time out.  Originally very well regarded by his trainer, the selection contested a Grade Two at Wincanton at odds of 4/7 in November 2009 and he could have a class edge in a field like this.

It is worth noting that cross country experience is vital in the race, but Lacdoudal finished third last season having never contested a race like it and Nicholls is sure to have Gullible Gordon spot on.

Selection – Gullible Gordon 16/1 (Stan James)
