Binocular can lay claim to be the top juvenile hurdler this season after running away with the John Smith's 250th Anniversary 4-Y-0 Novices' Hurdle at Aintree on Thursday afternoon and is now a 7/1 shot (from 16s) with Blue Square for next year’s Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Tony McCoy always had Celestial Halo in his sights and when he asked the JP McManus-owned gelding to quicken, the race was over in a matter of strides.

‘Binocular was not only impressive in winning at Aintree but also paid a huge compliment to Captain Cee Bee – his Cheltenham conqueror – and this pair should have a big say in the outcome of next year’s Champion Hurdle,’ said Blue Square spokesman George Primarolo.

‘Being in the same ownership, it is unlikely that they will meet each other again until the Festival next year but there is no doubt that JP McManus has plenty to look forward to in the two mile hurdling division next season’.

Captain Cee Bee is a 10/1 shot behind Katchit, Osana and Binocular.

Elsewhere, Blazing Bailey is 8/1 (from 10/1) for next year’s World Hurdle after beating Inglis Drever in the Long Distance Hurdle, whilst Kauto Star has been eased to 4/1 for the Gold Cup after being narrowly denied a win in the totesport Bowl by Our Vic.

Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle – Blue Square bet: 5 Katchit, 7 (from 16) Binocular, 8 Osana, 10 Captain Cee Bee, 14 Celestial Halo, Sublimity, 20 bar.
