Andrew Balding is hopeful Briareus will able to pick up some valuable prize-money in the Champion Chase at Cheltenham next week. The nine-year-old returned from a near two-year absence to beat I'msingingtheblues at Kempton in November, form which has been well advertised by two subsequent victories for the Arkle-bound runner-up.Briareus then ran with plenty of credit to finish fourth in the King George VI Chase over three miles on Boxing Day and while Balding is unsure of his ideal trip, he believes a fast run two miles round Cheltenham should be right up his street."All being well he will take his chance in the Champion Chase, but he is due to school on Wednesday so we can make a definite decision after that," said Balding."We were always going to give him a break after the King George as there wasn't too much for him in between that and Cheltenham and he doesn't want much racing."We're still not certain what his best trip is but at the end of the day, he has won a Kingwell Hurdle over two miles and beat I'msingingtheblues over that trip at the start of the season."I'm sure he'll stay further but two miles is about right at Cheltenham."For sure it's going to be very tough to beat Master Minded, but the reason we are going is that it is good prize-money for the places."It looks like Tony McCoy will not be available to ride him so we have asked Paul Carberry and if he is fit and well, he will probably be on board."He should suit the horse well and he has obviously had plenty of success at Cheltenham before."Briareus is a best-priced 25-1 for the Champion Chase at Ladbrokes (£25 free bet)
