At the time of writing, the Paul Nicholls-trained Denman is trading as the general 11/8 favourite, although there is plenty of 6/4 available (Ladbrokes, Chandler), and sportingbet are out on a limb at 13/8. However, only a fool would want to back him at that price as the champion is not likely to make it back to the track until the Aon Chase in February at the very earliest, and it's hard to imagine his price shortening in the meantime, unless something serious happens to his stablemate Kauto Star - last year's runner-up and current second favourite at 3/1 (Stan James).

At this stage, he is again likely to pose the biggest threat to Denman in March, but having watched the re-run of last year's race on several occasions, it's almost impossible to envisage a turnaround in form if Denman returns in the same shape, and no true jumping fan would wish for anything other than a full recovery for last year's champion. However, the bombshell over his irregular heartbeat must weigh heavily on punter's minds and, with Denman taking such a large chunk out of the market, the temptation is to find one at a juicy each way price.

That's easier said than done though. Neptunes Collonges completed a famous 1-2-3 for Nicholls back in March and he went on to land his second successive Guineas Gold Cup at Punchestown. The problem is he too is unlikely to be seen out until well into the New Year, and his current price of 9/1 (William Hill) doesn't have much scope to shorten in the meantime. Besides, I'm not totally convinced that Cheltenham is his track.

Tidal Bay is the first non-Nicholls horse in the betting at around 14/1 (20/1 totesport), but he's yet to race beyond 2m5f and, although he's very exciting, his stamina has yet to be proven. Certainly, he did look short of speed when winning the Arkle last season, and while he should get an easy 3m around Kempton, it's hard to see him being effective over the Gold Cup trip of 3m2f. The Ryanair over 2m5f looks the ideal race for him.

Two second-season chasers who should have no trouble staying are Albertas Run (25/1 Coral) and Air Force One (33/1 Skybet), first and second in last year's Reynoldstown at Ascot in February. They later contested the SunAlliance Chase at Cheltenham in which Albertas Run, jumping more fluently than in previous races, ran out a comfortable winner, while Air Force One disappointed in fifth on what was unsuitable soft ground. If they continue to progress, both can be leading players come March, but realistically would need to improve in the region of two stone to win.

At his very best, Exotic Dancer wouldn't have to improve much to trouble the likes of Denman and co, and he might have slipped under the bookies' radar at 33/1 (bet365). True, he didn't run up to form in last year's Gold Cup or behind Our Vic and Kauto Star at Aintree, but he must have been close to a personal-best when second off a mark of 172 at Aintree in October, suggesting that he was over whatever was troubling him last season. If he can reproduce that sort of form throughout the season, he's going to be once again a major player in all the big chases this winter.

Verdict:
Considering his problems and delayed return to the track, Denman is a big no-no for ante post purposes. Finding one to beat him, however, is no easy task, although Exotic Dancer, still only an eight-year-old, appeals as the one most likely to shorten during the month's ahead.

Recommended Bets:

Exotic Dancer 1pt each way @ 33/1 bet365
Exotic Dancer (without Nicholls' runners) 1pt @ 6/1 William Hill

Champion Hurdle 2009 Ante Post Betting Tips

http://www.cheltenham-racing.co.uk/category/Tuesday-(Day-One)/Champion-Hurdle-2009-Ante-Post-Betting-Tips/

With the National Hunt season now in full swing, this is a good time to look ahead to the four feature races at the Cheltenham Festival, starting with the Champion Hurdle.

Let's begin with last year's winner, Katchit, who is trading at a standout 10/1 with Ladbrokes for a repeat. You may remember, last year's Champion Hurdle was run in bizarre weather conditions, and it was a triumph of grit over class that saw Katchit become the first five-year-old to win the race since See You Then in 1995. Take nothing away from Alan King's hurdler, who is as gutsy as they come, but I can't help thinking that, barring similar conditions in March, something will come through and beat him. Of course, he has a great Cheltenham record in his favour (five from six), but there are some nice novices from last season circling overhead, including Binocular, who has leap-frogged him in the betting despite not being seen out this season.

Nicky Henderson's Aintree winner will have to match the exploits of Katchit by defying the atrocious record of five-year-olds in the race, but the way he slammed Triumph Hurdle winner Celestial Halo at the Liverpool track without barely coming of the bridle was very impressive. Before that, he had acquitted himself well in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle, travelling like the winner at one stage, and he looks sure to be a major player in this season's big 2m contests, although whether he's a value bet at the general 6/1 is a different matter.

The Emma Lavelle-trained Crack Away Jack was no match for Binocular at Ascot last January, but he is unbeaten since, including when running away at the last to beat David Pipe's Imperial Cup winner Ashkazar in the Fred Winter Hurdle. He needs to improve again to trouble the big guns, but he is progressing the right way judging by his smooth success at Chepstow last month, although his current price of 7/1 (Paddy Power) doesn't give much scope for contraction between now and March. On the other hand, Ashkazar could represent some value at 16/1 (bet365, Chandler) as he was trying to give 2lb to Emma Lavelle's horse at Cheltenham, so wherever that one finishes he ought to finish upsides.

The Irish have a terrific record in the Champion Hurdle and Sizing Europe looks their best hope at this stage. After easily disposing of dual Champion Hardy Eustace in the AIG Europe Champion Hurdle in January, Sizing Europe was sent off the 2/1 market leader in March, but suffered an injury in the race and was pulled up on the run in. If he returns to his best, the current 7/1 (Stan James) would be a huge price, and he's already proved his well-being by finishing runner up to old adversary Hardy Eustace at Punchestown on Sunday, with Jered (12/1 Blue Square) beaten five lengths into third.

Last year's second and third, Osana and Punjabi are next in the betting at 12/1 (Skybet) and 16/1 (Paddy Power) respectively. Osana produced a stunning display of front running to beat Katchit (giving 4lb) by eight lengths in the International last December, and nearly repeated the trick in the big one on level terms, only failing by a length. Lightly raced, there should be plenty more improvement to come. Likewise Punjabi, who finished off last season by winning a Grade 1 at Punchestown, where he had Sublimity (16/1 BetDirect) in second, and he's won twice on the flat since. He looks an ideal type for the Christmas Hurdle as Kempton's flat terrain will suit him ideally.

Of the rest, Snap Tie (20/1 sportingbet) still has a bit to prove and we shouldn't read too much into his recent defeat of Katchit at Kempton as he had his perfect conditions, unlike Katchit. Still, he looked very quick that day and would come right into Champion Hurdle reckoning on good ground, which is so often the case at the Festival, although you are obviously taking a chance backing him now. Greatwood Hurdle first and second Numide (50/1 Boylesports) and Aigle D'Or (25/1 William Hill) need to show further improvement, but cannot be totally ruled out in a wide open year.

Verdict:
Sizing Europe will be hard to beat if coming back to his best and Katchit should not be underestimated but, of those at bigger prices, Ashkazar makes plenty of appeal. He's yet to put his credentials on the line this season, but he has already shown a great attitude and undoubtedly has the natural ability to take a hand come March.

Recommended Bet:

Ashkazar 1pt each way @ 16/1 bet365, Chandler

Get £100 free from bet365 now

Champion Hurdle 2009: Snap up Jered at 14/1

http://www.cheltenham-racing.co.uk/category/Tuesday-(Day-One)/Champion-Hurdle-2009-Snap-up-Jered-at-14-1/

For the Champion Hurdle 2009 I see that Noel Meade’s JERED is trading at 14/1 (bet365, Paddy Power) for next year’s renewal after romping home in the Champion Novices’ Hurdle on Tuesday.

The six-year-old is getting better with every run and, if going the same route as his stablemate Harchibald (Fighting Fifth, Christmas Hurdle, Champion Hurdle), he could be value at half those odds.

Punters should help themselves to the 14’s as he is a great trading tool at that price.

<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ASP /><ASP:LITERAL id=ltback1 runat="server">Contrary to popular opinion, the Grand National is not a lottery of a race. Instead, it is actually one of the most reliable races to solve as several of the runners can be eliminated from calculations from a stats perspective. Here are my 10 golden rules that when applied can help punters eliminate those very horses unlikely to win.

1. Ignore horses aged seven or younger and those aged 13 or older. The last winning seven-year-old came in 1940, while the last teenager to win was in 1923.

2. Knock out any horse who has fallen more than twice in their careers.

3. Rule out any French-bred horses (those with a suffix of ‘FR‘ after their name). Plenty have tried, and failed in recent years, but no such horse has won since Lutteur in 1909.

4. Stay away from novices. The race is a severe test even for the more experienced horses.

5. Ignore horses that are set to carry more than 11st 5lb. This year, the bottom weights are likely to be carrying around 10st 8lb, which gives the horses with more weight a better chance. However, the fact remains that only Red Rum in the last 50 years has carried more weight to victory.

6.Throw out all non-stayers. Every winner in the past four decades had already won over 3m+, so check the form before placing your bet.

7. Put a line through any horse wearing headgear (blinkers, visor, cheekpieces). Earth Summit wore blinkers when winning in 1998, but the only other blinkered winner since the war was a slightly fortuitous one - Foinavon!

8. Get rid of those horses who have had less than four runs this season. Every winner in the past 10 years had had at least four runs in preparation for the big race.

9. Concentrate on those horses rated between 136 and 147. That group has provided every single winner in the past decade.

10. Overlook anything that hasn’t had a recent run. Each of the past 10 winners had previously run in the past two months.

Apply all these trends and you are left with a handful of horses, including the ante post favourite CLOUDY LANE (6/1 sportingbet) and the strongly fancied SLIM PICKINGS (888sport, Betfred). They’re a must for any shortlist but, at bigger odds, BAILY BREEZE (66/1 Blue Square, Paddy Power) looks a great each way chance as the blinkers he normally wears are being left off, meaning he fits all the main stats. BLACK APALACHI (66/1 William Hill), currently one of two horses on 10st 8lb, is a sound jumper who has been running well in Ireland’s top 3m chases, including when runner-up in the Thyestes Chase in January. He too has worn headgear in the past but, if it is left off, he’s terrific each way value. </ASP:LITERAL>

Get £100 free from bet365 now

Paul Nicholls and Harry Findlay on Denman

http://www.cheltenham-racing.co.uk/category/Friday-(Day-Four)/Paul-Nicholls-and-Harry-Findlay-on-Denman/

<ASP:LITERAL id=ltback1 runat="server"><?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ASP /><ASP:LITERAL id=ltback2 runat="server">

Paul Nicholls and Harry Findlay gave us their reaction to Denman's victory.
</ASP:LITERAL>

<ASP:LITERAL runat="server">Trainer Paul Nicholls said: "It’s going to take a while to sink in. Denman galloped, jumped and never put a foot wrong. He got Kauto on the back foot really - he didn’t jump as well as he normally does. Neptune Collonges has run a career best.

"I talked to each jockey as an individual about how they could ride their race to win. It was fairly obvious what we were going to do with Denman. Neptune Collonges was going to have to go flat out the whole way to be fast enough for him. Kauto didn’t jump as well as he can do. I don’t know whether the ground was a bit tacky for him but we’re not going to make any excuses for him. Today he got beaten by a better horse. He’ll be back here, there will be plenty more races but today
wasn’t his day.

"As I’ve said all along with Denman, he has just been progressing. In the Aon Chase he beat nothing. The form wasn’t there in the book, but he’s just taken that extra step today. Nobody knew if he was capable until he went out there. There was no point in me putting my head on the block and saying he’ll beat Kauto.

"There wasn’t enough evidence to say that. All I knew was that when I saw him on Monday I’ve never, ever seen him look better than he did. Paul Barber said to me ‘that’s the best that horse has ever looked’.
"Denman definitely won’t run again this season. I have to discuss it with Clive (Smith) yet about Kauto and Neptune Collonges will probably go to Punchestown for the race he won last season, the Guinness Gold Cup. That suits him and he hasn’t had that long a season so he’ll probably run again.

"Sam got a cussing after The Tother One from me but I said to him ‘just go out there, be chilled, forget about what’s happened and do your best.’ He’s done that he gave him a fantastic ride and all credit to him. He’s a young man, there’s a lot of pressure and he did it very well. I’m very proud of him.

"Kauto’s been beaten and all horses get beaten some time. There’s no reason why they won’t run again each other again and on different tracks you might get a different result.

I don’t know where we’ll go with Denman next. I can’t see him running in the Grand National myself but let’s hope they’re both fit and healthy next season and back here.

On having won three Gold Cups Paul said: "I think the best one is always you first one, when See More Business won for Paul (Barber) but the pressure for this one and getting the one-two-three, it just doesn’t get any better.

Denman’s co-owner Harry Findlay told us : "Paul Nicholls has done a brilliant job to get the horse in superb condition on the day. But when you know it’s against his stable star, the way the whole thing has been handled has just been brilliant. There’s no other sport where that rivalry could be played on that sort of level. Racing is a massive benefactor of that.

"The excitement level was so good. We were all buzzing and to watch it unfold. You could feel it in the crowd. They knew Kauto was beaten. It’s unique and I’m really proud to be a part of it. I’ve always believed Denman was a left-handed tank. Sam was always going to ride
Denman and I was more than happy with that. Sam and Denman get on great. This was a carbon copy of the Hennessy. He was very neat today and that’s what won him the race and that’s exactly what Kauto wasn’t.

"We thought what has happened would happen but I thought we’d break Kauto between the third and second last and if we did win, we’d win by even further. The way it’s worked out it’s probably even more impressive from Denman.

"He’s a serious, serious horse. Who will want to take him on? He’s had a ball today, he probably has got tired but he really is very hard on other horses. If I owned another horse, I wouldn’t go near Denman. I wouldn’t want to take him on over three and a half miles around Newbury on soft ground.

"You can take Kauto on any time, not because of his lack of ability but you can take him on and run again but with Denman, no wonder Ollie Magern came out this morning, say no more. It’s not a lot of fun.
"He’s had no injuries of any note and if he stays sound he looks like a terrorist."

Asked if Denman will one day eclipse Arkle, Findlay said: "I didn’t see Arkle. I’ve only seen the end of the race when he beat Mill House and that doesn’t look that impressive but poeple say Arkle took a keen hold and that takes a hell of a lot out of horses. Denman doesn’t have that problem. They are obviously different types of horses. Arkle was more of a flashy horse, more of a Kauto Star but I’d have to guesstimate that Denman is the best since Arkle in terms of the Gold Cup."</ASP:LITERAL>
</ASP:LITERAL>

Claim Blue Square's £50 free bet now

Cheltenham Festival Free Bets Summary

http://www.cheltenham-racing.co.uk/category/Free-Bets/Cheltenham-Festival-Free-Bets-Summary/

Today's the last day to take advantage of the huge bookie promos on Cheltenham including the massive Ladbrokes free bet.

Inglis Drever became the most successful staying hurdler in the history of the Cheltenham Festival when winning the Ladbrokes World Hurdle for a record third time.

The nine-year-old did not have the clearest run during the race, but when he saw daylight in the finishing straight he had too much pace for his rivals, and eventually beat Kasbah Bliss and Kazal by a length and seven lengths.

Owner Graham Wylie said: "Maybe one day I’ll realise what he’s done, but it is all so emotional now. I just sat quietly in the stand and watched and watched - and he had so many traffic problems. But when he came over the last he was too good for them. "He’s a street fighter, who never knows when he’s beaten, and he loves the attention he gets in the winner’s enclosure.

"I was very quiet until the last and than I went crackers. Can I just say what a great performance by Howard Johnson. I’m chuffed for him, for the yard, for the horse and for Denis. We knew the horses were in good form and we stayed calm and quiet throughout the week. I’m very proud and happy."

Trainer Howard Johnson went to church this morning, continuing a lucky routine that has stood him in good stead in recent years. He said: "It’s all been worthwhile, all the hard work. My daughter Lucy went out this morning back at home and the daffodils were out, and the same thing happened in 2005 when I had three winners. She sent us a picture of the flowers on her phone and we took it as a good sign."

Talk of Inglis Drever’s retirement was not completely dispelled after the race, and Johnson said: "He’s only nine, but I don’t want anything to happen to him. If we’ve got a chance in the Order of Merit we might go to my lucky course Aintree. We might come back here for one more next year but there is not many races left in him. This is near enough the greatest training performance of my life and I’m very proud."

"He can be tailed off in a gallop at home, then hit the hill and run past horses, and he does the same here. You can always tell when he’s coming with a run because he puts his head on one side and his eyes pop out.

"I said to Denis, stay on the inside no matter what happens, because he’ll take you there when it matters. He missed a year and its come good. All credit to the horse first and then Andrea
and Graham have been great supporters of the yard. It’s just unbelievable! He’s one of the toughest horses, next to Direct Route, I’ve trained. He’s come good today which is great. I’ve been getting a bit of stick from certain press men which I didn’t take very nicely, to be honest. A few people have been writing articles in the Racing Post which I didn’t take nicely too. I’ve always had faith in the horse."

Denis O’Regan, riding his second Festival winner after Tidal Bay in the opener, commented: "What a horse! What a horse! I can’t believe it, three in a row! I never panicked, we were never in trouble.

He just took off. Howard said beforehand that we wouldn’t want to get there before the last. I was a bit down at the last but he did a good jump at the last and he did the rest himself. What a fantastic week to get on these two horses."

Ginni Wright, Inglis Drever’s groom, said: "It’s so nerve-wracking when you know you’ve got probably the best horse in the race and he felt so fantastic at home. He felt even better here this morning leading him out and yet you know there are so many things that can go wrong – all these hurdles and fantastic horses in the race but he’s done it.

"It doesn’t make for easy viewing. My heart is going so fast – I hope the paramedics are well trained in cardiac arrest! My legs are like jelly and I’ve no stomach left but it’s all worth it. I knew once he jumped the last hurdle just in front, I always start my run then because, if there’s a horse sitting on his back side, they’ll not pass him. And yet again, just behind another horse he would probably make you feel he wouldn’t do it. He had to fight. They are all fantastic horses – there were no bad horses in the race or at Cheltenham . Top horses and top jockeys. But the one who deserved to win it most has won it today.

"You can never get used to bringing in winners here. I’m not a party girl – I party with
the crowd. They make it for me, for the horse and for everyone. This is my party."

Trainer Howard Johnson paid tribute to his stable star Inglis Drever after the nineyear-
old became the first horse ever to win three Ladbrokes World Hurdles. "He loves to come up hills, he loves to do that at home and loves it here and you can tellhe’s enjoying it because he cocks his jaw and his eyes pop out when he’s running well. As I’ve often said he’s like a terrier, he’s like a little Jack Russell - a bit like me," said Johnson.

"I suppose I’ve had to be like a terrier in here. It’s not bad to have come from being a sheep farmer and cattle dealer to having two winners at Cheltenham this year. It’s been hard at times, I’ve been kicked and got tinnitus which gives me a buzz in my ear all the time, but it makes it easy to get up in the morning with owners like Andrea and Graham Wylie. There’s been a little bit of tension with how the horses have been running but we were more positive after Tidal Bay winning on Tuesday."

"If he’s got a chance in the Order of Merit I might go to Aintree if the ground is good to soft, but if not we’ll turn him out and if he’s still loving racing then we’ll keep him going next season. But he wouldn’t have any more than three runs next season - Newbury, the Cleeve and then here. The problem is finding another one like him. I know Sir Mark (Prescott), who sold him to us, will have send us a fax when we get home, he’s a top man."

Johnson has changed his stable jockey a couple of times in recent seasons but hopes Inglis Drever’s rider Denis O’Regan will still be attached to his Co Durham stable next season.
"Denis will still be there next season if he wants to be," added Johnson. "I’m still pally with Paddy Brennan, who didn’t settle in the north and is much happier now he’s based in the south, but not with Graham Lee but that’s because he won’t speak to me. But Graham has looked after Denis very well since he came over here."

Denis O’Regan added: "I’m just delighted to be here in the year of Inglis Drever although in a way this was the hardest year to be riding because of him having won twice before. I had great faith in Howard that he would get the horses here spot on this week and he has got them here in one piece and it’s a privilege to ride them. He didn’t hit a flat spot today, just got into a bit of trouble at the top of the hill and it was always in the back of my mind that the boss had said to me that there was no need to be in front going over the last. But I winged the last in front then came up the outside because I knew there was better ground there from when I walked the
course. I was worried half way around by the French rider (Christophe Pieux) because he was knocking the whole place down going round. This is only my third visit to the Cheltenham Festival and I realise that I’m a very lucky fellow - I’m only 25 next week and I’ve been very jammy."

Owner Graham Wylie, who bought Inglis Drever for 110,000 guineas at the 2003 Tattersalls Horses In Training Sale, added: "He was my third-ever horse. My first was Lord Transcend, who won three or four, then Royal Rosa and then this one so that really got me the bug. But I will leave all decisions to Howard and if he wants to retire the horse I’ll go along with that. Denis has ridden a great race but let’s not forget Paddy Brennan and Graham Lee who have also won on him.
</ASP:LITERAL>

Ladbrokes.com £25 exclusive new user free bet

Wales celebrates as High Chimes comes home in the Kim Muir Chase

http://www.cheltenham-racing.co.uk/category/Thursday-(Day-Three)/Wales-celebrates-as-High-Chimes-comes-home-in-the-Kim-Muir-Chase/

<ASP:LITERAL id=ltback1 runat="server">

<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ASP /><ASP:LITERAL id=ltback2 runat="server">Wales celebrated a winner in the Fulke Walwyn/Kim Muir Chase with High Chimes, trained at Llancarfan by Evan Williams and ridden by his assistant, James Tudor.

It was a first Cheltenham Festival victory for the pair, and also for owners William and Angela Rucker, who bought the horse from point-to-point trainer Sheila Crow after he had won a couple of races in that sphere.

Tudor, 24, Britain’s reigning point-to-point champion, said: "The whole race went fairly easily, although he’s a big horse and he got in a bit tight to one or two fences. I couldn’t believe how well he was travelling as we came down the hill.

"It’s an amazing feeling - I love this place and I’ve ridden winners at Cheltenham, but to do so at the Festival is something else." Tudor rides fancied Bon Accord in tomorrow’s Christie’s Foxhunter Chase.

Williams said: "This is all down to the help I’ve been given by my assistants, Nicky Williams and James, who are both good amateur riders, but James was on the horse because he could do the weight.

"It’s teamwork and I can’t do that on my own. Last time this horse ran at Warwick [when pulled up] he was never travelling and never happy on the sticky ground, so we gave him a break and he came here a fresh horse.

"We had a winner at Ayr on Monday and before that it was a fortnight since the last one, and people start questioning what we’re doing, but I suppose we want to be known as a yard that has a winner every day, and big winners on Saturdays.

"It’s fair to say I’m somewhat emotional, particularly for James, who has been with me since he was 15. Mr and Mrs Rucker [who also own Williams’ Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup winner State Of Play] have supported me, and Mrs Rucker’s mother, Pat Tollit, was the first person to send me a horse, so it means a lot."</ASP:LITERAL>
</ASP:LITERAL>

Claim £250 free from Boylesports now

Patrick Mullins on Festival Roll of Honour

http://www.cheltenham-racing.co.uk/category/Wednesday-(Day-Two)/Patrick-Mullins-on-Festival-Roll-of-Honour/

<ASP:LITERAL id=ltback1 runat="server">The Mullins family has long been synonymous with success at Cheltenham and there was a new name on the roll of honour after today’s concluding Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

The 18-year-old Patrick Mullins partnered Cousin Vinny, trained by his father Willie, to an emphatic success and returned to a huge cheer in the winner’s enclosure. "I think I’ve ridden 39 winners but I’d swap them all for this one," said the successful rider, who is still at school and will take his leaving certificate in June. "I didn’t have a choice about which of Dad’s I would ride, he picked which ones we would all be on but I was happy to be aboard Cousin Vinny.

"He travelled so well that I was concerned he might be going too easily and not keep going but in the end it was a matter of how far he was going to win by. This was my only ride and I’ll be celebrating tomorrow."

Willie Mullins, who was saddling his sixth winner of the race, also rode one of those
horses to victory - Wither Or Which in 1996. "Patrick is not going to ride for too long because he’s tall and will probably get too heavy," said the winning trainer. "I thought this might be his only chance ever of getting a win here and I was just hoping that I’d got him on the right one, but we managed it.

"I just thought this horse’s finishing speed would come into play but I was worried it might be getting too soft because the horse is by Bob Back, you worry about everything at Cheltenham."
"It’s been a hell of a long day and it seems a long time since we were walking the course this morning but this will give us all a bit of a lift."<ASP:LITERAL id=ltback2 runat="server"></ASP:LITERAL></ASP:LITERAL>

Click here to go to Bodog

Gold Cup Tips: It Has To Be Kauto at 5/4

http://www.cheltenham-racing.co.uk/category/Friday-(Day-Four)/Gold-Cup-Tips-It-Has-To-Be-Kauto-at-5-4/

<ASP:LITERAL id=ltback1 runat="server">2007 Winner: Kauto Star; Trainer: Paul Nicholls; Age: 7; SP: 5/4f

Key trends:
The 90’s provided us with a few shock winners, but the class horses have shone through in more recent renewals, and a key stat is to look for horses rated 165 or higher as they provided six of the last 10 winners from just 14% of the runners. That’s not to say that a shock isn’t possible and if you fancy an upset look to back one that either won or finished second at a previous Festival, although that criteria only fits the main contenders - Kauto Star, Denman and Exotic Dancer - this year.

Second-season novices have won seven of the last 14 renewals which is a big positive for Denman (Knowhere also fits this bill), while the Royal & SunAlliance Chase has highlighted five Gold Cup winners the following season since 1980 including two that completed the double. Again, another positive for Denman.

Horses aged between seven and nine have won 13 of the last 14 renewals, although that trend doesn't really help us this year, as only the ten-year-olds Knowhere and Afistfullofdollars can be excluded on that score. It’s worth pointing out that the last four winners were aged seven, which might augur well for a shock as the three main protagonists are all aged eight, but I doubt it somehow.

The contenders (best current price):
The clash we’ve all been waiting for between Kauto Star (5/4 Paddy Power, Ladbrokes), who has been pretty much invincible in the last couple of seasons, only being beaten once in his last ten starts, and Denman (2/1 Ladbrokes), the wide-margin winner of last season’s Royal & SunAlliance and this season’s Hennessy. The betting very much suggests that this is a two horse race - as it might be - but we shouldn’t forget last year’s Gold Cup runner-up Exotic Dancer (12/1 VCbet), who came closest to beating his old rival Kauto Star at Haydock in November, beaten by half a length. However, a change in tactics failed to work in the King George and, after a missed prep run in January, he has questions to answer about his well-being. Of the rest, Halcon Generlardais (16/1 Stan James), trained by the in-form Alan King, ran a cracker under top weight in the Welsh National when second to Miko de Beauchene and can’t be ruled out with any confidence. Knowhere (33/1 William Hill) beat Rynair winner Our Vic last time and could run into a place. Paul Nicholls is also represented by Neptunes Collonges (28/1 totesport) and Star De Mohaison (40/1 totesport) - what price a 1-2-3 for the trainer? Blue Square go 5/1.

The verdict:
The six million dollar question here is: "Should I back Kauto Star or Denman?". The answer is neither as they are not value at their current prices, although my opinion, for what it’s worth, is that Kauto Star is the classiest horse I've ever seen, - which includes the likes of Best Mate, Desert Orchid and Burrough Hill Lad - and his cruising speed and turn of foot is likely to prove too much for Denman. So, it’s Kauto for me but, if ever there was a race to be savoured without having a bet, it’s this one. Enjoy!

Betting advice:
BACK - Kauto Star (if you must have a bet) @ 5/4 Paddy Power, Ladbrokes
NO LAY</ASP:LITERAL>

Claim Blue Square's £50 free bet now
